Coin of the day, day 9: World design capital

World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 50 €

The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design named Helsinki the 2012 World Design Capital. In honor of the anniversary, a 50-euro gold/silver commemorative coin was issued. The Mint Directors’ Conference 2012 awarded the title of Most Technologically Advanced Coin to the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 collector coin struck by Mint of Finland. The WDC coin separated itself from the competition through its finely executed design. What makes the WDC coin special is its centre section. It is gold-coloured and undulating, with clear differences in elevation; yet the highest ridge in the pattern is on the same level as the rest of the coin. The grooves and ridges are mirrored on the opposite face of the elegant coin.

Finland is known as a country that is highly innovative, offers high-quality education, and whose residents enjoy from wonderfully clean nature. The reputation of Finnish design began to grow in the 20th century, thanks to Kaj Franck, Saara Hopea, Tapio Wirkkala and other wonderful artists

Finnish, Nordic design relies on modern and simplified design. Modern, stylish practicality is comfortable and makes life pleasant.
